From
William
Griffin
at
Thrapston
in
Northamptonshire
, to
T.H
. in
Bath
,
Somerset
.
So
that
T.H
.
can
form
a
right
judgment
of
Sell’s
argument
with
Griffin
(acting
on
behalf
of
T.H.)
, he
is
enclosing
the
following
copy
document
:
‘December
28
1809
.
John
Sell
for and in
consideration
of
£30
to him
paid
by the
said
Mr
Griffin
as
agent
for
Dr
Haweis
without
any
deduction
or
abatement
whatsoever
at or
immediately
before
the
execution
hereof
–
he the
said
John
Sell
doth
here
promise
and
agree
with and to the
said
Thomas
Haweis
his
executors
,
administrators
or
assigns
, that he the
said
John
Sell
shall
, and will, on or
before
the
8
day
of
February
next
ensuing
…1810
quit
,
surrender
and
yield
possession
of
all
that
messuage
or
tenement
situate
and
being
in
Aldwincle
aforesaid
and also
all
that
little
close
in
Aldwincle
aforesaid
with
all
the
rights
,
members
and
appurtenances
and also
all
and
every
other
the
messuages
,
lands…premises
belonging
to the
said
T
.
Haweis
in
Aldwincle
(reference
to the
rectory
in
Aldwincle
and any
other
property
connected
with
it)...and
now
in the
tenure
or
occupation
of the
said
John
Sell…unto
the
said
Thomas
Haweis…It
is
further
agreed…that
the
said
T
.
Haweis
shall
and will
make
an
allowance
unto
the
said
John
Sell
from the
date
hereof
to the
said
8
day
of
February…after
the
rate
of
fifty
pounds
per
annum
and for the
true
performance
,
each
binds
themselves
etc etc in
Griffin
thinks
that
T.H’s
‘observation’
is
very
reasonable
,
‘namely
he
cannot
transfer
to a
successor
when
he
leaves
readily
allowed
, but
though
he has
bound
to
leave
the
house
,
which
he
means
to
do
at the
time
, he
does
not
mean
to
leave
the
town
, for
I
saw
him and
Mr
[Frederick]
Powys
yesterday
, and to
my
certain
knowledge
, he has
applied
for
2
rooms
ready
furnished.’
If
Griffin
understands
right
,
Sell
intends
to
attend
every
Sunday
,
even
if
only
in the
chuch
porch
, and he
may
in
law
demand
his
salary
for the
year
.
Further
legal
matters
are
discussed
with
regard
to the
Sell
issue
.
Sell
has
proved
‘one
of the
most
worthless
,
troublesome
fellows
I
ever
met
with.
I
considered
the
business
of a
very
disagreeable
nature
to
bring
into a
court
as would be
attended
with a
very
heavy
expense
.
I
would not have
francked
you
for
£120
what
cause(?)
you
have
recovered
of a
beggar
more
than
removing
him
out
of a
pulpit
into a
jail
and
I
am
certain
he
is
not
worth
carriage
.. He
told
me
he had a
most
just
claim
on
you
for his
salary
, but
I
refused
hearing
any
more
of his
gibberish
so
I
presume
you
will
hear
from
him…’
Griffin
showed
T.H’s
last
letter
to
several
persons
,
some
as would be
pleased
and
‘others
I
knew
it
would
torment
as a
just
and
gentle
chastisement
for their
past
atrocious
behaviour
–
Lewis
Davison
and the
clerk
has
disposed
of
your
kind
donation
for
which
you
have the
best
thanks
of the
inhabitants
. As
I
was
walking
up
the
street
on
Monday
last
, a
woman
before
as
I
did
not
know
was
loudly
exclaiming
“God
bless
Dr
H
. for his
kindness
to the
parish
[and]
a
curse
on these
presbyterian
[unreadable
word]
as has
sent
him
away
from
us…’
The
thought
of
losing
£50
hangs
heavy
on
Sell’s
mind
and
Griffin
thinks
that he
means
to
quit
the
house
on the
day
before
he
needs
to.
Thomas
Walden
sends
his
respects
–
he
is
thrashing
wheat
in a
barn
and
cannot
obtain
much
in the
way
of
liquor
to
wash
the
dust
down
with.
Walden’s
wife
is
the
cook
for
Mr
[Frederick]
Powys
and also
sends
her
best
wishes
.
Griffin
has
asked
Powys
if an
inventory
is
to be
taken
of the
furniture
etc and if he
means
to
take
them as a
purchaser
, to
which
he
replied
that he
does
not.
(after
Sell's
dismissal
,
Frederick
Powys
agreed
to
act
on a
temporary
basis
as the
Anglican
minister
in
Aldwincle
until
a
permanent
replacement
could
be
found)
Griffin
also
showed
T.H’s
letter
to
Mr
Eastwick
–
his
family
has been
much
afflicted
by the
loss
of their
second
daughter
–
a
most
amiable
young
lady
.
Reference
is
also
made
to
Mr
Squire
and
other
matters
relating
to the
life
of the
parish
and its
inhabitants
.
