From Benjamin Francis at Northampton, to [John] Sutcliff at Olney in Buckinghamshire. Soon after arriving in Northampton (about 12 o’clock today), Francis received Sutcliff’s letter of the 20th. Francis intends to be with Sutcliff on Thursday the 26th, which leaves enough time to attend preaching in the morning. He intends to be in Northamptonshire at Kettering and Walgrave etc next week as he is invited to preach three Sundays in a row at Northampton. His love should be passed to Mrs Andrews and Sutcliff should tell her that he slept last Tuesday and Wednesday night at good Mr Palmer’s house and all the family were well. (1 sheet, 1p.) 21 September 1793 John Sutcliff (1752-1814) was born in Halifax, Yorkshire. As a youth he was under the influence of John Fawcett and Daniel Taylor and was educated at the Bristol Baptist Academy. From 1775 until his death he was the Baptist minister at Olney and enjoyed good relations with Anglican evangelical John Newton. Sutcliff was a founder member of the Baptist Missionary Society and was one of its most enthusiastic supporters. |
