Alas
for her
dear
‘S.S’
[‘Sweet
Sydney’
-
a
term
of
endearment
for
Elizabeth]
. She
sees
that
it
is
true
from a
packet
of
books
sent
by
Elizabeth’s
dear
brother
(either
James
or
Samuel
McDowall)
and the
news
has been
confirmed
by her
weekly
newspaper
.
(Reference

death
of

Haweis
,
which

Oh
that her
poor
friend
be
comforted
at this
distressing
time
.
Diana
knows
that
Elizabeth’s
soul
will
bend
in
submission
to the
divine
will. She
hopes
that
Elizabeth’s
dear
brothers
are on
hand
at this
unhappy
time
.
Diana
will not
write
more
for
fear
of
adding
to
Elizabeth’s
fatigue
, but she will
know
how
much
she in
Diana’s
thoughts
and
prayers
. In a
postscript
, she
adds
that she has been
unwell
this
last
week
but
is
feeling
better
now
.
