From
Hugh
Evans
in
Bratton
,
Somerset
, to
Reverend
John
Martin
, to be
collected
at
Mr
Dudner’s
near
Temple
Bar
,
London
.
When
Martin’s
letter
arrived
respecting
William
Cullen’s
‘connection
with
us’
,
Evans
was
about
to
set
off
on a
long
journey
that
prevented
him from an
immediate
response
and was the
means
of him
forgetting
it
for a
long
time
after
his
return
.
Evans
is
sorry
for this
omission
.
Cullen
was
‘regularly
baptized’
when
he was
living
in
Bristol
and
continued
in
full
communion
with the
Baptists
throughout
his
time
in the
city
.
Evans
feels
that his
zeal
was
slightly
abated
from what
it
was at the
beginning
and that he was
distracted
by
non-religious
matters
. He also
fell
into a
state
of
‘indifference
and
lukewarmness.’
Evans
does
not
know
how he has
acted
since
he
left
Bristol
but has
never
heard
anything
immoral
about
him. The
people
here are
pleased
to
hear
of
Cullen’s
‘revival’
and have
no
objection
to his
being
received
into
Martin’s
community
. In a
postscript
,
Evans
added
that
Jeffrey
Whitaker’s
death
on the
30th
ult
.
occasioned
Evans’
being
here at that
time
to
preach
his
funeral
sermon
. His
regards
should be
passed
to
Martin’s
wife
,
Mr
Allen
,
Mr
[Benjamin?]
Francis
and
anyone
else
who
enquires
after
him.

Hugh
Evans
(1712-1781)
was
born
in
Wales
,
son
of
Caleb
Evans
. He
moved
to
Bristol
in
1729
and was
baptized
at
Broadmead
Baptist
Church
a
year
later
.
Evans
was
ordained
into the
Baptist
ministry
in
1734
and
became
the
co-pastor
of
Broadmead
Church
in
1740
. He also
served
as
senior
pastor
and
president
of the
Baptist
academy
between
1758
and
1781
.
Evans
was the
co-founder
with his
son
Caleb
of the
Bristol
Education
Society
in
1770
for the
financial
support
of
able
evangelical
ministers
from
across
denominational
boundaries
.
John
Martin
(1740-1820)
was
born
in
Spalding
,
Lincolnshire
. He
moved
to
London
as a
watch
finisher
and
joined
the
Baptist
Church
under
the
influence
of
John
Gill
.
Martin
entered
the
ministry
and
served
pastorates
in
Huntingdonshire
and
Leicestershire
before
moving
to
London’s
Grafton
Street
congregation
in
1773
.
Under
Martin’s
ministry
, the
congregation
increased
in
size
and
moved
to
larger
premises
in
Keppel
Street
.
Martin’s
radical
political
opinions
in the
aftermath
of the
French
Revolution
proved
controversial
and the
London
Baptists
finally
disowned
him.
Martin
was
however
able
to
continue
in the
ministry
at
Keppel
Street
until
he was
incapacitated
by a
stroke
in
1814
.
Benjamin
Francis
(1734-1799)
was
born
in
Newcastle
Emlyn
,
Wales
, the
youngest
son
of the
prominent
Baptist
minister
Enoch
Francis
. He was
raised
in
Swansea
and was
baptized
in
1749
before
studying
for the
Baptist
ministry
in
Gwent
and
Bristol
.
Francis
was
ordained
in
1758
and
built
up
a
flourishing
congregation
at
Shortwood
in
Gloucestershire
. He also
itinerated
widely
and was
active
in
evangelical
outreach
.
Francis
was a
noted
poet
and
hymn
writer
in
both
English
and
Welsh
.
