Plain Text Transcription	From Eliza Elton at Richmond Terrace in London(?) to [Elizabeth] Haweis at Beaufort Buildings in Bath, Somerset. Their acquaintance might be short, yet she cannot help feeling for Elizabeth the affection that she might have for an old friend. She therefore takes the liberty of asking Elizabeth concerning the health of her old friend T.H. Eliza left him so unwell that she is anxious to hear if he is recovered from his bad cold. She has been very busy since her return to Clifton near Bristol or she would have written sooner, for T.H. has been much in her thoughts, together with their wonderful child [John Oliver Willyams Haweis]. She was very grateful for the books that he sent – they are truly excellent. (1 sheet, 2p.) 4 January 1812 Eliza/Elizabeth Elton (d.1822) was the eldest daughter of Sir John Durbin, a wealthy merchant and Mayor of Bristol. Sir John was probaly related to Henry Durbin of Bristol (possibly his brother?), a prominent lay-Methodist and associate of the Wesleys. Eliza was married in 1776 to Sir Abraham Elton (1755-1842), the son of Sir Abraham Isaac Elton of Clevedon Court, Somerset. Elton had been educated at Eton, Queen’s College Oxford and Christ’s College Cambridge. He studied law and succeeded to his father’s baronetcy in 1790. Elton was ordained in 1783 and served as curate to the evangelical Thomas Robinson of Leicester.
Notes	Endorsed: "Dear Lady Elton's 1st letter. A friendship which only closed in Death." Also noted at the top of the letter, "She was a great friend of my Fathers. I remember her climbing up upon his bed to kiss him a few hours before he died, and his smiling beautifully on her, so that he exclaimed Oh Look look look! She was very fat. I remember her sobbing as she sat in his chair after his death. Genuine sentiment in the aged and unlovely finds little sympathy. She has been once beautiful."
