Plain Text Transcription
From
David
Crosley
at
‘Stubby-Lee’
(Presumably
in the
area
of
Blackburn
or
Bacup
where
Crosley
was
based
at this
time)
to
Richard
Thomas
. What a
mercy
it
is
, that
through
Christ’s
mercy
,
‘we
poor
helpless
worms
are
enabled
to
help
one
another…’
Accordingly
,
Crosley
would
greatly
value
the
help
of
Thomas
in
our
‘Macedonia’
.
Thomas
should
come
to
Bacup
in
Lancashire
two
weeks
from
today
and
preach
in
Crosley’s
room
there
–
Crosley
is
to
visit
their
brethren
in
Manchester
on that
day
. He
hopes
that
Thomas
will be
able
to
fulfill
this
request
without
inconvenience
to
others
.
Crosley
will
repay
the
favour
when
opportunity
presents
.

March
1744
David
Crosley
(c.1669-1744)
was
born
near
Todmorden
in
Lancashire
.
Raised
by a
pious
aunt
,
Crosley
worked
as a
stonemason
and
preached
at
night
.
Initially
Presbyterian
, he
joined
the
Baptists
in
1690
and the
following
year
preached
for
John
Bunyan’s
congregation
in
Bedford
. In the
same
year
he
built
a
chapel
in
Bacup
as a
base
for his
ministry
and that of his
cousin
William
Mitchell
.
Crosley
was
formally
called
into the
Baptist
ministry
in
1692
and
went
onto
minister
to
congregations
in the
border
region
between
Lancashire
and
Yorkshire
. He was
particularly
successful
with
Mitchell
in
planting
new
churches
and
earned
himself
the
title
“Evangelist
of the
Pennines”
. In
1705
Crosley
moved
to a
chapel
in
London
but
soon
left
in
disgrace
because
of
sexual
misdemeanors
. He
returned
to his
native
area
and
founded
more
congregations
independent
of the
Baptists
,
although
he
later
returned
to the
Baptist
fold
.
Crosley
continued
to
evangelize
until
a
very
short
time
before
his
death
. In his
later
years
,
Crosley
was in
communication
with
George
Whitefield
and he should be
considered
an
important
forerunner
of the
later
larger
Revival
.
