From
William
Cooper
in
Dublin
to
T.H
. at the
Chapel
house
,
“Vineyards’
,
Bath
in
Somerset
. He has
long
waited
for a
letter
either
from
T.H
. or
Lady
Ann
[Erskine]
in
reply
to his
letter
about
the
business
in
Cork
.
However
, he has not
heard
anything
despite
the
fact
he
wrote
more
than
three
months
ago
.
Cooper
did
not
know
until
a
few
days
ago
that
T.H
. was in
Bath
or he would have
written
before
now
and he
hopes
that his
long
silence
has not been
construed
as
disrespect
for there
is
no
man
on
earth
who
he
respects
more
than
T.H
. and
truly
he has
good
reason
for this.
Cooper
knows
that
T.H
. will be
pleased
to
hear
that
success
continues
to
attend
Cooper’s
ministry
.
After
his
return
from
Cork
he
spent
two
months
in
Dublin
working
at
Plunkett
Street
[Chapel]
while
Brother
Norn(?)
itinerated
in
Ulster
. The
chapel
was
always
crowded
and
many
have
since
professed
to have been
awakened
. They have been
able
to
fit
out
a
small
house
adjoining
the
chapel
for the
minister
that will be as
good
as
£30
per
annum
added
to the
minister’s
salary
–
accommodation
in
Dublin
is
expensive
.
Cooper
also
preached
a
fortnight
ago
to
raise
a
collection
for the
benefit
of the
Plunkett
Street
widows
.
£31
was
raised
together
with
some
money
sent
in
since
.
Cooper
has
recently
returned
from
visiting
Limerick
where
he
spent
a
month
–
never
in any
place
has he
received
as
much
‘favour’
as in
Limerick
.
Bishop
[Thomas]
Barnard
of
Limerick
behaved
to him as a
father
and
all
the
Anglican
clergy
were as
brothers
,
especially
John
and
William
Hoare
. The
attention
paid
to the
gospel
was
wonderful
.
‘I
think
that there
is
a
great
prospect
of
good
in the
Church
. The
majority
of
gospel
ministers
are
I
think
in the
[Anglican]
establishment
.
10
dear
spiritual
youths
and
some
of them
ordained
and
all
of them have
taken
their
degree
, are
now
ready
to
go
forth
from
Trinity
College
[Dublin]
in the
blessed
work
of the
ministry
. That
man
of
God
[John?]
Walker
has
done
an
immensity
of
good
there.’
‘Last
Monday
week
the
plan
of an
academy
similar
to
Cheshunt
College
(The
successor
institution
to
Trevecca
College
as the
ministerial
academy
of the
Countess
of
Huntingdon
Connexion)
. was
resolved
upon
by a
committee
appointed
for that
purpose
.
Three
young
men
were
examined
and
admitted
as
probationers
for
three
months
into the
new
institution
.
Mr
[Robert]
Haldane
of
Scotland
has
‘got
us
3
young
men
to
help
in the
work
and
2
or
3
more
are
expected
.
I
am
sure
that as
many
hundreds
would
find
enough
to
do.’
Cooper
sets
off
on
another
preaching
tour
next
Friday
. He will
visit
Ballbriggin
,
Drogheda
,
Dumleer
,
Ardee
,
Castlebelongham
,
Dundalk
,
Carlingford
,
Carrickmacross
,
Ballybeg
,
Cootlehill
,
Cavan
,
Kells
,
Hovan
,
Ashbeg
and
Dublin
.
Cooper
is
often
involved
not
merely
in
public
preaching
but
speaking
in
private
houses
to
large
and
elegant
congregations
,
often
more
than
sixty
in
number
.
Many
of the
most
respectable
inabitants
of
Dublin
attend
preaching
and the
same
is
happening
in
Limerick
also. He would be
grateful
for
some
missionary
news
as he has not
recived
one
single
letter
since
leaving
England
relating
to the
overseas
work
.
Cooper’s
wife
and their
two
children
are
both
well
.
Letters
should be
directed
to him at
Mr
MacPherson’s
,
21
Ross
Lane
,
Dublin
.

1801
Lady
Anne
Erskine
(1739-1804)
was the
eldest
daughter
of the
Earl
of
Buchan
and the
sister
of
Henry
Erskine
,
Lord
Advocate
of
Scotland
. At a
young
age
, she
moved
to
Bath
in
Somerset
and was
converted
to
Methodism
after
attending
worship
at the
Countess
of
Huntingdon's
chapel
.
Erskine's
father
died
in
1767
and she
became
increasingly
involved
with the
Countess
of
Huntingdon's
Connexion
.
During
the
last
few
years
of the
Countess's
life
, the
two
lived
together
and
Erskine
transacted
correspondence
on her
behalf
. In her will, the
Countess
left
all
her
chapels
in
trust
to
Erskine
and
several
other
trustees
.
It
was
decided
that
Erskine
should
live
at the
main
chapel
at
Spa
Fields
in
London
and have the
direct
responsibility
of
prividing
itinerant
ministers
for the
Connexion
.
Erskine
died
after
a
long
illness
and was
buried
at
Bunhill
Fields
in
London
.
Thomas
Barnard
(1728-1806)
was a
graduate
of
Oxford
University
. He was
appointed
Bishop
of
Killaloe
in
1780
, and of the
diocese
of
Limerick
,
Ardfert
and
Aghadoe
in
1794
. He
corresponded
regularly
with
Charles
Wesley
and
took
an
interest
in the
musical
career
of
Wesley's
sons
. His
father
William
Barnard
(1697-1768)
as
Bishop
of
Derry
, had
ordained
the
Methodist
preacher
Thomas
Maxfield
into the
Anglican
ministry
.
William
Hoare
(c.1772-1823)
and
John
Hoare
(fl.1800)
were
born
in
Limerick
,
Ireland
, the
sons
of the
Vicar-General
of the
diocese
of
Limerick
.
Both
went
on to
enter
the
Anglican
ministry
.
William
was the
Rector
of
St
George’s
in
Limerick
and
became
Vicar-General
of the
diocese
while
John
was the
Rector
of
Rathkeale
.
John
Walker
(1768-1833)
was
born
in
Roscommon
,
Ireland
,
son
of an
Anglican
minister
.
Walker
was
educated
at
Trinity
College
Dublin
, was
elected
fellow
in
1791
and was
ordained
in the
Anglican
Church
in
1800
. In
1804
he
seceded
from the
Church
and
founded
a
congregation
in
Dublin
that
tended
towards
extreme
Calvinist
doctrine
.
Walker
moved
to
London
in
1819
and
supported
himself
by
lecturing
and
writing
. He
returned
to
Dublin
in
1833
.
Robert
Haldane
(1764-1842)
was
born
in
London
, the
oldest
son
of a
Scottish
landowner
. He
joined
the
Royal
Navy
in
1780
and
served
until
the
peace
of
1783
after
which
he
studied
at
Edinburgh
University
before
settling
down
to
manage
his
family
estate
in
Gleneagles
.
Haldane
experienced
an
evangelical
conversion
in
1795
and
thereafter
devoted
his
energy
and
considerable
fortune
to
promoting
revival
. From
1796
to
1804
he was a
director
of the
London
Missionary
Society
and was
active
in
various
related
ventures
such
as
educating
West
African
children
in
London
. From
1797
he was
heavily
engaged
in the
work
of the
“Society
for the
Propagation
of the
Gospel
at
Home”
. He was
particularly
concerned
to
sponsor
the
education
of
young
Scots
training
in
English
ministerial
academies
so
that they
could
return
home
and
spread
the
gospel
in their
native
country
. He also
built
“tabernacles”
in
large
Scottish
towns
and
cities
with the
intention
of
ministering
to the
working
classes
.
Haldane
is
said
to have
spent
£60,000
of his
wealth
in
promoting
evangelical
and
philanthropic
causes
.
