From Lady Barham [Diana Noel] in Llandindrod Wells in Powys to [Elizabeth Haweis] at Beaufort Buildings, Bath, Somerset. She is afraid that she did not inform Elizabeth where she could be contacted – her memory is almost destroyed through distress and illness but she does so want to hear of ‘our sweet Sydney’ (in Barham's letters the initials 'S.S.' are often used to denote a name-this evidence indicates that 'S.S.' stands for 'sweet Sydney' and that it was evidently an affectionate nickname for Elizabeth Haweis. It was also used by Lady Elizabeth Elton in her correspondence with Elizabeth Haweis.) so she must write to Llandindrod Wells directly. Since Diana wrote last, she has been in a new state of distress that she could never have forseen. ‘Having a law that [unreadable word] my eldest son; in short all their names except William’s and Gerard’s are in the bill. It has almost killed me, but my own faithful S.S. [sweet Sydney] will be glad to hear that I seem again mending…’ (1 sheet, 4p.) [1816] (annotated by Thomas Haweis [?] - 'Lord Barham's note of hand') |
