Transcription	[Letter of Charles Wesley, 1767, December 19, to Mrs Berkin via Miss March.] [Address panel:] To Miss Marsh [i.e., March] in Aldermanbury London for Mrs Berkin [Postmarks:] Bristol postmark, a large “B” with “RIS” in the top loop and “TOL” in the bottom. A Bishop mark (a divided circle with “12/DE”) shows that the letter arrived in the London postoffice on December 12. Red wax seal. Bristol Dec. 19, 1767 Dear Madam, God hath delivered, and doth deliver: therefore you may safely trust him, that he will deliver you unto the end. Your strength both bodily and spiritual, you will renew by waiting upon Him. Your late experience is another Proof to me that nothing will support a soul in stress of temptation but the Everlasting Arms. “Your soul may hang on the Decree; mine on Universal Redemption; yet neither can will be happy in pain & death, unless each can say My soul hangeth upon Thee; thy right-hand hath upholden me. No Opinion, whether false or true, can be a Succedaneum for the Light of his Countenance. Therefore, [p. 2, written crosswise] my good friend, give all diligence to make your calling & election sure. Add to your faith, virtue &c. Be diligent--that you may be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless. You are given to the prayer of faith. I rejoice with yr Partner most sincerely. But he has need sit loose to you, & to every creature: so precarious are all our comforts & temporal blessings. I desired your Sister to inform you of my wife’s safe delivery. She is far from being out of danger, having scarcely any life or spirit left it in her. You know her state too well. Poor Mrs Broughton is, I hope, comforted by her Sister’s recovery. In the midst of life we are in death. I am quite weary of it; yet must I wait all the days of my appointed time, till my change come. [p. 3] My great want is what you suppose me to have, the Spirit of wrestling Jacob. When it is well with you, remember us. I shall be glad you have recovered strength sufficient for conversing with your brethren & companions in tribulation. God who bids us [“]Comfort ye one another,” makes use of us to this very purpose. -- I hope your children are all well, tho’ you do not name them. -- I forget your Direction. -- Poor Mr Madan, I hear is sadly buffetted and bespattered. He sees (& feels) his calling. All shall work together for his good, & perfection thro’ sufferings. I am told Mrs Gaussen is quite awakened. If you hear any good news concerning her, you will communicate it. We salute the Church in yr house. Mr Berkin will not be weary of well-doing. The Lord be your Strength & Consolation.
