Transcription	[Letter of Charles Wesley, 1769, October 7, to Mrs Berkin] [Address panel:] To Mrs Berkin at Sutton near Croydon Surry [Postmark:] A Bishop mark (a divided circle with “7/OC”) shows that this letter was posted in London on October 7, the day it was written. Red wax seal. London Oct. 7, 1769 Dear Madam, Miss Marsh [i.e., March] gave us some hopes of seeing you & Mr Berkin in town, which hindered my Acknowledging the favor of his Letter. Great are the troubles of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth them out of all. Your sufferings are all given you in number, weight, and measure. May they yield the peaceable fruit of righteousness! And if God claims another of yr little ones, He will give you a resigned will, & an obedient heart. [p. 2] My Companion sympathizes with you in all yr afflictions especially your separation from yr children. Such a trial would break her heart. We never thought you neglected or seemed to neglect us, because yr deep affliction deprived us of the satisfaction of visiting you. Blessed be God who hath looked upon you & out of weakness begun to make you strong. May his Power be present to heal yr Soul also, & yr Partner’s & all yr children! I can wish you nothing short in of Perfect Soundness. Fear not, only believe, & trust in the Lord forever. Is any weak, & I am not weak. With the poor, the troubled, the tempted I was always one; therefore you, if such must have fellowship with me. O that we may know Christ & the full power of his Resurrection! [p. 3] Your Letter, returning from Bristol, has just now reached me. Providence has detained me here & will detain me still longer. After Ten years search, my friends have at last found me an house. We are sending in a few necessaries & hope to remove to it in a fortnight. If Mr Berkin should come to town, we shall be happy to see him in Chesterfield Street, Mary-bone, next the New Chappel. You must see your Godson at least with his eyes. But we will not desp[ai]r of seeing you yourself before we leave London. God will order the when & how, if it be a work prepared for us to walk in. I owe yr kind Partner a Letter & much love. My Master will reward the love ye have constantly shown, dear Madam, Yr faithful Servant in Christ C Wesley
