Description
J . Lawrence Smith (1818-1883) was an internationally renowned American chemist , formerly professor at the University of Louisville , Kentucky , and member in the American and French Academies . The letter , written in English and addressed to Marie Noelle Mangon , the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Dumas , a French scientist , accompanies the album 'Les Geysers dAmerique. ' Smith was sending the album to Mangon in return for her hospitality while he visited Paris the year before . The letter acknowledges Mangon's interest for Yellowstone's geysers .
