Notes |
A collection of seventeen autograph letters signed from the Revd. John Barker of Hull to his son the Revd. Henry Barker, Chaplain on HMS Defiance and HMS Renown and subsequently of Firebeacon, near Tiverton, Devon. Together with two letters to Henry from his brothers Samuel and William. Nineteen autograph letters signed in all, 70 pp, quarto, 1802-1813. Two letters have lines cut out and one is incomplete. Postmarks (including the scarce HULL 1802 mileage mark). Written on gold-edged paper. A lively and forthright correspondence reflecting the preoccupations of a blunt Yorkshire parson during the Napoleonic Wars. Full of patriotic fervour against 'the usurper Nap', the Opposition, Methodists and Bishops in equal proportions. Numerous comments on political, naval and military events (including the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson, the death of Pitt, the Napoleonic wars and the death of Sir John Moore at Corunna) and on local affairs in Hull, as well as a great deal of theological and moral argument. |
