Attending the opera in Naples , 1944

Description
It was not unusual to be at the "front " during the early part of the Italian campaign , only to retreat late in the day and return to Naples to attend the opera or engage in some other activity that had nothing to do with the war . On the morning of this day in April , 1944 , I had photographed casualties on the battlefield near the Rapido River and followed them to a hospital in Naples . Opera is as essential as red wine to Italian culture . The San Carlo in Naples virtually never ceased operations , during the periods of occupation by either the Germans or the Allies . And the performances were always outstanding , even though the staging showed the limitations brought about by austerity and war .
