Description
Portrait of Captain Henry Spencer , Thirty-fourth Indiana Infantry . Spencer participated in the battle of Palmito Ranch , near Brownsville , Texas . The battle on May 13 , 1865 , occurred over a month after General Robert E . Lee surrendered and is considered the last land action of the American Civil War . The Confederates , led by Colonel John S . "Rip " Ford completely routed the Federal forces . [Jerry Thompson and Lawrence T .
