Description
The area in and around the village of Cassino was totally devastated by the moving battles of the Italian Campaign . Destroyed beyond recognition , the area was the site of many battles that must be described as 'ego ' fights on the part of various commanders , who wished to pit their troops agains the enemy in a show of bravado . Thousands of soldiers - American , Australian , Polish and African , as well as German - lost ther lives here for a battle that never needed to be fought . In the valley is the remains of the village of Cassino .
