Description	Rare 1863 carte-de-visite of an African-American girl. Catharine Lawrence was an important Civil War nurse, the first to use anesthesia, and the author of an important and scarce autobiography.
Notes	Recto: [printed] Redeemed in Virginia By Catharine S. Lawrence. Baptized in Brooklyn, at Plymouth Church, by Henry Ward Beecher, May, 1863. Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence, a Redeemed SLAVE CHILD, 5 years of age. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1863, by C. S. Lawrence, in the Clerk's Office of the district Court of the United States, for the Southern District of New York. Photograph by Renowden, 65 Fulton Av. Brooklyn.
