Description	Handwritten letter to George E. Vincent from Amelia Minerva Starkweather. [most of the letter is written in another hand]. The letter is a series of remembrances about John Heyl Vincent at Chautauqua as related by Starkweather. Starkweather remembers Vincent through events at Chautauqua, including the summer that Thomas Edison was invited to the institute but refused to speak even though Vincent practically dragged him on stage. Amelia Minerva Starkweather was born in 1840 in Starksville, New York. She was an educator and a poet and wrote both prose and verse for the periodic press, as well as many hymns. She was actively connected with the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and was president of the Home Missionary Society for three years. In addition, she served as superintendent of the Western New York Home for Friendless Children and of the Deaconess home of Brooklyn, N.Y. Starkweather had a permanent home in Chautauqua and attended many events at the Chautauqua Institute. She married Jacob Flint Starkweather of Norwich, CT in 1910. In 1912, the couple published a book of poems called “Leaves from the City Beautiful.”
