Thomas
Edison
was
invited
to the
institute
but
refused
to
speak
even
though
Vincent
practically
dragged
him on
stage
.
Amelia
Minerva
Starkweather
was
born
in
1840
in
Starksville
,
New
York
. She was an
educator
and a
poet
and
wrote
both
prose
and
verse
for the
periodic
press
, as
well
as
many
hymns
. She was
actively
connected
with the
Woman's
Christian
Temperance
Union
and was
president
of the
Home
Missionary
Society
for
three
years
. In
addition
, she
served
as
superintendent
of the
Western
New
York
Home
for
Friendless
Children
and of the
Deaconess
home
of
Brooklyn
,
N.Y
.
Starkweather
had a
permanent
home
in
Chautauqua
and
attended
many
events
at the
Chautauqua
Institute
. She
married
Jacob
Flint
Starkweather
of
Norwich
,
CT
in
1910
. In
1912
, the
couple
published
a
book
of
poems
called
“Leaves
from the
City
Beautiful.”
