Also, a note along top of first page of letter in the handwriting of John Oliver Willyams Haweis: "Lady H. on Aldwinkle. Wants my father to give it up & go on Whitfield's invitation to Pennsylvania." My dearest Friend Your letter refreshes my spirits & gives me cause of praise that you are supported in spiritual & natural strength for our dear saviour's work. I am sure he will bless your own dear heart abundantly & by the experience of his power will enable you to be found faithfull unto death. I am truly glad to hear of the letter you wrote. I have only heard it was receiv'd by himself. H: is in town only to thunder against the truth which he continues to do. L-- D-- [Lord Dartmouth?] was with me for two hours the other morning but Mr W-- [Whitefield?] being here it ended in nothing but a desire from him that I would speak my sentiments to our friend fully on the All[win]kle affair which does make a dreadfull noise & has so very [p. 2] plausable[?] appearances against H[aweis] & our friend that all dread the publication of it. A gentlem[an] before a friend of mine chose to bring him[?] into the scrape as a party concerned but this person became answerath [overwrought?]. I know nothing of it which surprised the person extremely & then said if that was the case I ought to be informed [?] from under their own hands what friends I had which he was ready to make oath of. I want All[win]kle to be given up & H[aweis] to go to the great church in Pensilvania & to this purpose I shall speak close to our friend what dishonour with that connection is great. Indeed both the Lady & Gentleman will not honour me with notice[?] "Hast thou found me 0 mine enemy." The preaching is dead dry nonsense with emnity enough, more affectation than ever was in one animal[?]. In short, matters go ill but I do believe th[ose?] whole aim is braking our connection. I joy in dear Stillingfleet. May the Lord bless his soul & devote him by the truth to himself [p. 3] forever. Poor Whit[efiel]d is in the same case as us[?] all & is a faithfull champion for what they term enthusiasm but not that grace upon him he had for the work of Bath. I am, my dearest friend, distrest about Mr Fletcher. No letter & what can Mr Brown be doing not to set forward[?] when he has Mr Davi[e]s now with him. I am tired of writing & doing any thing for all seems to be so ordered that nothing but mischief & blunders follow all. I can do the same to Mr Hicks. Mr V:[enn] has just our feelings as if something was at hand, but what or how, he sees no more than I do. Don't consult me about any thing. You have all the light that can be wanted on the past[?] part before you & what you have done & do I do highly approve. I should be glad one thing was added that is a weekly communion by Shepard as the people might be ________ by that. If you see this in the same light I do, you will appoint it but if not let it rest. D[ea]r Jos[eph] had a long conversation & was invited to preach at the Lock. After a cool but warm contest on our point [p. 4] I told him it would be the case to draw him off & to appear of their opinion & this was the one motive I am full sure of the invitation. You know the tenderness of his spirit & that he hopes against hope on many things that he wishes, but he was not persuaded to stay which I thought a wonderfull providence & I hope he will see it one. I believe many are looking about them & the little credit of the Lock hearers to Christianity makes people look at what is said of the serious sett but all that can be said in the pulpit is said & the way that is here taken to make them better is to preach up meer[?] legal outward works as the proof of faith. This is the truth tho they don't mean it & from not seeing the sure fruit of their own doctrines which must be the necessity where the power is not. The only words given me since I came here is "go not into the way of the Gentiles" and their doctrines & lives lead to nothing[?] better". I have seen your dear [p. 5] sister Charlotte. She is a precious creature but thinking her clear on the point of the manifestation of our Saviour to the heart in order to believe on him savingly, I found she rather was surprised. However I went on & d[ea]r Jos[eph] was by & threw in many things to confirm looking beyond the bible evidence for its own fullfillment. Mr Shirley is arrived in England & I have had a close conversation & he said he was certain assurance (as he termed it) ought to be preached as it was now the only truth that gave any offence. I objected at the term as not so scriptural or conveying so powerfull & such solid sense as the manifestation of redemption[?] by the Holy Ghost which he agreed to. He is to preach at the Lock tomorrow & I hope will give them another lesson & show them they must be taught from above & not by their own carnal conclusions on the bible. Indeed, my dearest friend, my soul is grieved within me & all my outward affections in the opening misery of my poor sister who is [p. 6] growing worse every hour & nothing but the flights of resignation to what she knows nothing about & her own formal train of dutys. Should I be absolutely confined with her either from her arm being cutt off or by a sudden or gallowping consumption either of which must be expected to end fately[?fatally]. You will soon know & if I find the stir among them abate I should wish for you up. The way must be clear to your own heart. Wait patiently upon the Lord. This alone is my business & indeed he does keep the mind in peace with him who is staid[?] upon him. Be so kind my dearest friend to tell Mr Hemings[?] I have receiv'd his letter & that I expect money to be paid into my banker's hands in a few days, & in case there is no delay of that I will remit his & Mrs Oxford's bills by the very first opportunity & that it gives me concern I could not do it the moment I receiv'd them. I trust the Lord has cleared my way on this triring [sic] circumstance above [p. 7] my own expectation. I find all must come directly from himself. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. The helpers send all love as does dear Lady Ann who is a blessed witness & has much to do where she is. You comfort my poor heart with that blessed courage our dear & everblessing friend endues you with.from above. O! do remember me as poor Daniel [David?]. My Face is towards that temple that was raised up in three days & that receives all his true worshippers. I long my heart could tell you how much I love, bless & thank you.
