Plain Text Transcription	Letter 67 [Apl 7, 1766] [Address panel:] To Mrs Wadsworth at The Vineyards Bath My d[ea]r Friend How did your letter pain me in feeling that you wanted to hear from Chelsea & Howel[l ] Davi[e]s to be down. Nothing was ever half the mule that dear honest creature is. I am quite in distress to see dear Jos[eph]. I have sent to your brothers in Conduit street & have sent _______ to your sisters intreating them that I may see him at any rate, but the cross[post?] goes thru all day & night in every thing & about every thing so much that that I do assure you I think often I had better be in bed & asleep than take thought for one moment. The great & interesting point is the present steps that seem[?] taking & that is & appears to me of such inportance to preserve the truths of the gospel that I am sure every sincere soul wants the wisdom from above to direct. To be as short as possible, all the ministers both in London & Yorkshire [p. 2] L :, D: & c. are drop[p]ing into Sandeman’s system denying all expences & compr_____ all to the believing the bible which includes all as they say. Mr M[adan?], R[omaine?], & H[icks?], & c are dark & the last sermon H: who is sent for from all—but preached against me &c. said they were men filled with fine wine that had such fancys[?]. I would have chose (if I had been him) not to have used the very words of the Jews against the truth & when he said it he looked round they say in that very spirit & with that wicked countenance[?] they must have done when they said it. ~t Bath our friend hinted his approbation of Sandeman & I then told him he had overturned the whole of the glorious work in Yorkshire. By nothing else, he, Sandeman, vindicates all the whole practice of the world & this disposition they have sadly falling into & this Book supports them & they are in the very spirit of ridicule that he is & has been in ever since he wrote against all experiential[experimental?] religion. [p. 3] D[eaJr Mr Whitfield is a noble & bold champion and preach[edJ such a sermon on Sunday as since[?] make their ears tingle & to a most crowded chapel where many of the hearers both at Black Fryars & the L: [?LockJ must have been. It is nothing but truth by which error can alone fall. The world smells L: D: [?Lord Dartmouth] & hold him very cheap. Nothing can sink more than he does that my dear friend must all this end in the meer faxtion[?] of priests. I have every reason to believe they will never see me more. H: sermon was the third that has been preached with the violence of nature, these words are much explained to me. They are too many for me!! & the blasphemy shall Best on him separated from his brethren. When d[ea]r Jos[eph] comes he will have this matter cleared up, but I think I could be above all things thankfull to have you by the providence of the Lord sent up that you might see & walk thro them all. I say nor do any thing. All is warned against [p. 4] me as a monster & indeed such a scene I have never met with. D[ea]r Mr Whitfield seems to have greater grace upon him than ever & more strength to preach. If poor Still[ingfleet] was here he would be swallowed up. I see not a step of my road but to stand still & see the salvation of the Lord with us. I hope Brown is gone to send Fletcher or I know not what to do expecting d[ea]r Jos[eph] I am miserable least he should be ill. My d[ea]r Friend do let me know what money you will want that I may send you a note by the return of the post. The difficulty my hearest friend, I am under, I have been bound to thro[w] them all upon the Lord or I could not know what to do. My poor sister’s state that confines me close, this matter of the min—rs [Ministers?] your state of bondage at Bath, the fear of d[ea]r Jos[eph] being ill, the wants of supplies (as appears for the whole work seems as a mountain & still something says all is well, I see why I am here but not the immediate purpose [p. 5] or the end answered by it. Pray for me & yet some light & I will tarry the Lord’s Leisure. The poor souls that are preached to Think all is right as they cautiously preach scripture doctrines & that they are sufficantly[sic] possessed by believing the Bible. Sad fruits follow & such a spirit to hear the real truths to the heart never was at any time or any land. I don’t go the L[ock?] at present till that spirit subsides. Powis {Powys] was coming to see me & I find he was prevented & some souls I believe are quite turned out of the way. However, this must in the end clear my way. As I have declared, I will give up every friend on earth rather than depart from the one point of our Saviour’s greatest love & glory to poor sinners displayed in his appearance to their miserable hearts. Sir Charles is warm & Mrs Carteret & Caver. L: G: [Lady George] I believe in heart wishes them to be right but says little. From Mr M_____ house it is reported you are leaving Bath very soon, but I said I had not heart it from you. [p. 6] What door or way the Lord will open to free me here I know not for a useless creature in Christ [chains?] is all I can find myself. Let me have a line & tell me how you do. What should I do had & not the Lord raised you up as a friend for him & his poor _________. O! my heart loves you most tenderly & do write to tell d[ea]r Jos[eph] that expecting him every day prevents my writing & the fear it may fall into other hands. Mr Thrail is just come in & begs all that is kind.
