Plain Text Transcription	Letter 93 [Handwritten] [Feb 20, 1777] [Address panel wanting] My dear & kind Friends The openness & affectionate reception of my letter (which deserved only the name of thinking aloud & therefore less liable to win reproof than severity) I will thank you for, & your liberal sentiments on that & also the great obligation I feel myself under by the unserved ones yours contains so very judiciously given of these so immediately your own. The fairness, the humility & the sense with these very, very faithfull breathings[?] as a noble & disinterested minister of Jesus Christ so relieves & opens my heart as to give you more of my insider[?] to do what you will with. I admire & acquiess [?acquiese] with you in judgment upon the more tolerating spirit of our establishment than of any other kind of mode or order yet under my observation. On this footing & in this view of a true catholick church I revere & give it prefernce to all others & this from Scripture, reason, experience of other denominations, & my best light from the Lord attended me. All this has served to make my way the path only of prayers & tears in secret. The restraint (if ever attempted) that was first lay'd on my heart (as at all rates the Gospel must be preached [p. 2] & invariably set closely upon my every best & conscious feeling connected with my own soul & so mercifully united with its (I humbly hope) everlasting safety[?] leaves me under the indispensable state of suffering, barring [?bearing] & induring all things to be faithfull for this one end. Had my judgment been ever sufficiently clear the fields the highways would have found me the proclaimer of peace from this weight being important & continual. Here then was a place for many wearisome nights & days & the Lord seeing the simplicity of my heart for him, I truly believe he favoured me with this place or college where many more voices than mine could breath still better the longing of my heart & there are many circumstances to make it as certainly the Lord's appointment for me as my existence & which for one moment in ten years has never fail'd to have in fullest evidence. Many trials of precious faith has also been connected with it but never to abate the settled[?] & now awfull proof whose servant I was & who had his Mosses's[?] to nurse for him & his wages as fulfilling his will in the smallest degree great above what all earth could bestow upon me. The spred of the Gospel was my point. The next open plan was only consistant with & the severity of the heads of the church rendered that branch principally[?] impeded[?]. Yet the gospel to be preached to every creature stops not here & through all its way is & must be made. Mercifully in conjunction with my own profession & the priviledges permitted my condition in life the church door does & will stand open consistent with order & legal appointment. Our gracious Lord has here also induc'd yourself & others to offer freely the Gospel, & to that order that probably without this favour from him never would have heard or thought about it. Mixtures in the infancy of this reformation was admitted & such which now have no excuse for being allowed & these still prevailing & even increasing has determined my future services as distinct as possible to the dissenters. I became one to serve them with a minister & as to them as settled congregations, but no interfering on either sides, & the students unordained the general servants of both. Yet merely as exhorters or candidates for whichever ordination they might think themselves called to. By this means confusion is in our places absolutely prevented, but the terriable inovations now continuing from party renders my care, patience & endeavours unweared to keep at any tolerable distance such evils that has more distress for me [p. 3) than language has an explanation for, & yet to persist if that method only attainable for my great point the association of Wales consisting of several clergy eminent in their grace, gifts, & services with many others (I suppose above a hundred) excellent & faithfull men living harder than any present, travelling night & day over these mountains at the hazard of their lives. All these who are warm & hearty for our cause as their own I have thus explain'd myself to, willingly to become the servant of all so 1 might be free from all. All the clergy in the association of Wales as well as the exhorters are as sanguine members of the church as you can be & yet from the same[?] view of serving at all events the necessity lay'd upon all to preach the Gospel to every creature can only approve this method as that in which mixtures do not subsist & yet charity & impartial labours for Christ's sake render men apostolick & in this matter I believe we shall most fully concur[?] & the most eminent that preach English agree to give me their labours in the chapels successively when at liberty themselves or my calls for help from them are necessary. Should this succeed all is well, but as I have not one scheme on earth the Lord's will & his kind providence is my only trust being by this means (as for myself) neither gains or losses which I believe to be the place of such a [p. 4] weak & worthless servant as I am, but too, too, sure I am to live, & often constrain'd to fear I shall be turned out of his bless'd services yet ever agreeing in so doing he would do most right & that while my heart grones to die his willing sacrifice such is the poor pensience [? penitent] of his daily bounty. I want to know something about the great Towers that you expect should fall. Alas all that is not honest, humble & simple will not long do for God's house. I learn this with many other things [?]. From these things I suffer but Charity bareth all things endureth all things & so I am but kept simple, honest & faithfull each day having nothing to do but to die in the sun[?sum] of all my wants. The Lord knows my ignorance & will not let me give a false touch to his ark & living under his direction separated from all the hopes or fears of this present evil world. This little corner in Wales will be my priviledge to live & die in. The church is proud, corrupt & ere long will be ripe for distruction, so that London, &c., &c., grieve my spirit with lip services & which matters so important ought to dwell for ourselves & others as the continual preparation for that world meteness for which must make our heaven. The freeness & constant friendship shown to me in your services to the people [p. 5] in our little Hills of Sion claim your time & choice of any most sacred to the variety of your engagements & allow me to ask if I might take the liberty of hoping for you at the opening of our new & noble chapel at the Mulbury Gardens when compleated. Lord March ____ [?] protection of the Pantheon obliges my particular attention to have this the most regular. This I only hint as a matter for your choice & as I would have a very great difficulty in neglecting to shew every mark of & gratitude, so would I as certainly avoid anyone possible cause of the least embarrassment. The summer plans must be settled & the proper helps for all depended upon in this. Nothing is yet done. The great range into dark places for many students I have a most extensive plan for. I believe I mention'd in one of my letters the Plan lying before the College for certain supplies, & no part of Wales, Cornwall or Devonshire included this is thirteen hundred & six miles before they can return & but one inn (between Harwich & Norwich) to lye at. All preaching places at due[?] distances. This some months ago & since which Shaftesbury & other places are open'd--from only Hull to Norwich through Lincolnshire will this year require nine students to labour with all their strength & this even with complaint from the people of further help being wanted. Such great [p. 6] things are arising by our poor weak labours & this th[o]ugh Mr Glascot’s labours only & my much blest & faithfull Rams Horns. These are sent me as my work increase ever unsought by me. For the chapels there wants the united engagements of regular ministers & such principles as will have their hearts fully engaged for the spred of the Gospel this way & would also relieve me by a kind inspection with myself of the whole work. The whole burden being now upon myself & the infinite attention of these great varietys both of spiritual matters & temporal ones with the emnity guile & Instruments of many I am to guard patiently against. You must be sure nothing but the Lord's divine supports for my mind & body could be sufficient & which my soul hitherto bless's & adores him for. Dear Mr Wills seems ready for any thing to help, & O! may the Lord raise up friends to his own cause with a single eye to carry forward this immense work, & yet encreasing one for his glory, for such I pray & waite for this must be a preparation of the heart from the Lord to offer freely & unless this appears I must yet trust in the Lord be doing good yet expecting for[?] him. He shall in his way & time bring it to pass. As to Mr Shirley's intentions, it appears to him & me but as an other opening for the regular clergy in London. This & the [p. 7] & the Mulbury Gardens being freed from the Madly Pye[?=Madeley=Fletcher?] established the work in London upon the strictest order. I have nothing in this but patronizing of it & which Lord M-- gives the greatest publick sanction to let his meaning be what it will, & may set at liberty many that are yet bound.
