Plain Text Transcription	Letter #57 [Dec 27, 1765] [Address panel:] To Mrs Wadsworth at Mr Burkins House in Spring Garden Near the Admiralty office Westminster My d[ea]r my very d[ea]r Friend, Your letter which I received with joy left me in reading the conclusion of it sorrowfull. I am so sure that nothing but being very ill would carry you a journey to London[?] & in this distress about you I am left. I think of you, pray for you & draw lotts for you, but that does not bring you to Bath. Your friendship & d[ea]r Calab's must be the Lord's own work. All is up in arms & the Brandons are now more closely united to the Leightons than ever but things have happened that satisfie my heart. They were not worth keeping & I am thankfull that they are braking [sic] off & will over head & ears be ere in love long with the B[rethren]. They are just the people for them I am quite clear of them all & mean to be so & that not from any degree of the smallest resentment but from simple conscience. Howel Davis is coming up in his old spirit. Last night he preached like an angel. Never was so faithfull & so Humble a sermon& the [p. 2] the people all like so many lambs, the B[rethren] can’t bear him yet there is many of their people every night from curiosity or to be a little quickened. Mr Shropnal was with me to day & the Bowles are far gone but he seems to steer clear of them. Nothing can come up to their art & guile. He seems to think Little _____ has more of this than any of them & he finds that as they ____ towards the B_____. They look all love & fellowship for others indeed my d[ea]r friend when I see the goodness of the Lord in saving me from spliting upon that rock I can glorifie [glimpse?] his saving grace. I think Chapman courcing [sic] off & poor Grigg thrown us all off with a word, in short all stands with them according to my very heart I am far & may your spirit & mine continue so thro all & so become servants of all, you comfort my heart most exceedingly about dear Calab. I do assure you I find none like minded to you both, true pilgrims must be true servts. & none else I suppose you find we are put again, into the news for having in house[?] a blessed [p. 3] owns us let men & devils roar faith in him will carry us as on eagles wings all beside has as little meaning as use the fruits of this will make an angel's heart burning love burning zeal & boldness of ____ gus strength will make us strong his love will make us poor his liberty will make us free indeed in heaven or on earth. I want nothing but what he has to give & what he is willing & must give to poor creatures that looks nor thinks nor hopes for any help but what is really & living derived from himself--through him we can do all things, let all the powers of our soul my d[ea]r friend be fully centered upon him & be satisfied to live without any thing or every thing that faith does not obtain from him alone. This makes a life practically great certain sensible devoted & universally courageous. All but this fails & faints but life & heaven is eternally united in their , to be one of the Lord's worthies of this sort. My soul pants continually. his favourites of this kind must meet fire, toward famine & all the powers of Hell & nature to prove its victory over them all. The Spirit of Bondage to the world, to creatures to opinions to doctrines either present or more remote [p. 4] just open our poor hearts, heaven he only has to give truth, peace & power are all in his hands & every other object is but more or less deviling the eye. I am a disperate creature because a disperate sinner. This makes desperate faith by which alone all is attainable, the soft clothing I will wait for till the white robes proves me possesst of the spirit that belongs to this garment at present Esan’s filthy garments cover me & thro these I have Jacob's Blessing while I wear these I must be a man of warr & if faith in the friend of sinners doesnot conquer all the powers of hell & designs of bad men I desire to fall a ____ you see what a strange animal you my d[ea]r friend you have chose for your companion as a pilgrim. You are almost as much abused as I am. Such a determined spirit of spite is continually invading the rest & peace of our saviours kingdom that I am weary of every thing but fighting but this I am sure unless you was intended as a great help & blessing in this work the devil would not be so visiably set against you. I shall long to see d[ea]r Caleb. I am sure he will love d[ea]r Mrs Davis. I shall rely on [p. 5] many particular of all sorts from you while in town. My love to Mrs Burkin & kindest remembrance to Mr Burkin. Our children &c go on well & the society increases, I trust I shall find a greater power among them then at present I hope the fire is kindling on earth & the flame will appear soon & of the right sort. Mr Harris I think is in an anxious state on account of the present distress his Idea of a catholick spirit seems to confound sentiments rather than unite in the main point. I beg you will let me know particulars of your health & who you consult & what you do, for I can depend upon you in every thing but the care of yourself. I hope you will see M.rs Whitfield & should Mr Berrige come to town do hasten him to Sussex for the Baptist are making havock of the flock. I have charg'd them with deadness & lukewarmness in the cause of the Lord. Nothing can come in while his love power and zeal keeps us alive. This resists the poor stuff such Christians bring in. O! my d[ea]r friend, my burdens are heavey indeed for sometimes nothing seems good but death in the fight I do believe you help to bear them. Surely we [p. 6] see greater things than these. I feel as if I was almost at the end of the journey & yet that something will come that will satisfie me more than to love—le[a]ve things just as they are. You will see my dr. friends in St James place.
