The John N. Rowe III Collection of Texas Currency at the DeGolyer Library is the most comprehensive in the United States, representing thousands of notes, scrip, bonds, and other financial obligations, from the 1820s through 1935. John Rowe has been collecting notes all his life, and he gave the collection to SMU in 2003 so that it would be preserved and made accessible.
The initial online version of the John N. Rowe III Collection of Texas Currency contains a sample of digitized banknotes that represent various time periods and places. You can browse the 11 notes in the collection, or search them by place, date, issuer, denomination , and/or keywords.
Represented are notes from the Republic of Texas, 1836-1845, early statehood, 1845-1861, the Confederacy, 1861-1865, and the national bank era, 1867-1935.
Each side of the note was scanned at 1200 dpi. A single image, containing both sides of the note, was created at 300 dpi and uploaded into the digital collection.
