DIGITAL SERVICESNorwick Center for Digital Services

CUL’s Norwick Center for Digital Services (nCDS) provides a full range of digitization and digital library services. NCDS works with CUL to scan, transfer and capture digital files for many types of original source formats; create web display and playback files for video, audio, image, and text; and develop metadata schema for digital collections and their related archives.

For more details about the extensible framework we have created to build digital collections using ContentDM, read our “SMU ContentDM Guide: Framework for Building a Collection.”

about the collection | browse items | search

Welcome to the JCPenney Dynamo Newsletters collection. The Dynamo, a monthly company magazine first published in April 1917, was designed to educate and motivate JCPenney associates. Each monthly issue of The Dynamo contained company news, inspirational messages, and training to help associates increase sales. Read more about the history of The Dynamo.

In the JCPenney Dynamo Newsletters collection, you can browse and read 31 sample issues of this innovative, and often entertaining, corporate newsletter, which ceased publication in 1932. Two issues from each year of publication are available as searchable PDFs, available for educational use. (Note: Searching may not turn up all instances of each word due to inconsistencies in the OCR results.)

This collection is part of Southern Methodist University’s DeGolyer Library, which houses the JCPenney ArchivesMr. J.C. Penney, as well as Mr. Penney’s personal papers. DeGolyer Library is part of Central University Libraries.

The JCPenney Dynamo Newsletters collection was made possible thanks to a grant from the JCPenney Company Fund, Inc. Each issue was scanned in 2005 by Lauren Ostergren, a Southern Methodist University STARs student. The digital collection was created by Central University Libraries' Norwick Center for Digital Services, DeGolyer Library, and Systems Office.
